Football, The Eagles and Weddings

13 Oct

Football is often like a wedding.

And historically, the Eagles have fallen into that dreaded category.  The one that carries a stigma and its own unfortunate slogan: “Always a bridesmaid, never a bride.”

The Eagles are very competent at the bridesmaid role.  They wear the dress.  They plan festivities.  They appear happy to be the bridesmaid.  It’s all a lie.

Let’s pause for a quick historical recap.

2000: Won Wild Card Playoffs.  Lost Divisional Playoffs.
2001: Won Wild Card Playoffs.  Won Divisional Playoffs.  Lost Conference Championship.
2002: Won Divisional Playoffs.  Lost Conference Championship.
2003: Won Divisional Playoffs.  Lost Conference Championship.
2004: Won Divisional Playoffs.  Won Conference Championship. Lost Super Bowl to Patriots.
2006: Won Wild Card Playoffs.  Lost Divisional Playoffs.
2008:  Won Wild Card Playoffs.  Won Divisional Playoffs.  Lost Conference Championship.
2009: Lost Wild Card Playoffs.
2010: Lost Wild Card Playoffs.

You get the picture. Some years they are simply a bridesmaid.  In 2004, they got to play the Maid of Honor.  And every time they smile and pretend to love being a bridesmaid.  It’s expected.  Smile for the photos.  Give a toast.  But inwardly seethe because they deserve to be the bride! When will it be their turn?

And this year, they watched their best friend, the Phillies, play the bridesmaid role.  And they smiled and toasted and grimaced.  And thought “Maybe this is the year!”

But now they know.  There is something worse than always being a bridesmaid.

This year, they aren’t being invited to the wedding. Not even to the kids table.

And it hurts.
